When completed, this trail will traverse the Continental Divide form Canada to Mexico, through five states, and many specially designated areas. Congress recognized the unique scenic quality and cultural characteristics of this route and in 1978 identified a 100-mile-wide corridor straddling the Continental Divide for the future placement of the Continental Divide Trail. When completed, the trail will provide non-motorized recreational opportunities to thousands of Americans.
