Wonderful Wilderness Experience

We recently went on a 3 day backpacking trip into the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness. even though we could see I70 and lots of lights in the Grand Valley of Colorado, we were assured that we were along around the campfire every night. The hike into the canyons was at times stenuous, but it offered fantastic scenery for all 3 days.
March temperatures were ideal for a venture into this desert/canyon landscape. Nights around a warm campfire were very welcome, surrounded by an exciting landscape. At times, we could see traffic on I70 and definitely lights across Grand Valley, but this was a wonderful experience. We normally enjoy a more remote wilderness experience, but this offered a beautiful change from forest and mountaintop. Even though wildlife was hardly ever seen, the area was alive with evidence of animal life.
Even though the lack of people was a great plus, this is somewhere I would recommend for anyone wanting beautiful scenery while hiking. The need to carry so much water is definitely a problem, so go when it's not too hot.
Visiting areas like this make it evident, why we need the Conservation System.
